It seems everyone is now playing with and talking about AI such as Midjourney, DALL-E 2, Adobe Firefly and now its integration into our usual creative tools.  Opinions and concerns are filling posts and articles across social media.  Now Adobe has integrated Firefly technology into the latest Photoshop Beta in the form of Generative Fill.  I have to admit it is pretty cool.  It’s a huge time saver and a pandora’s box of creativity.  Like it or not, this specific AI tool doesn’t do anything that creatives couldn’t already do within Photoshop.  Now modifying an existing image or creating composites can be done faster and easier.  Some folks are concerned creatives could pass off AI generated images as legitimate photography or art, this is nothing new and unscrupulous creators have and will always exist.  These AI tools may be a game changer for generating even more imaginative creations, but they don’t really change the ethics of our industry.  Honest people will still be honest, and the others…oh well.  I took a recent image from a studio shoot with an amazing local band and used the Generative Fill tool in Photoshop Beta to alter the ‘creativity’ of the image.  I could have accomplished this using traditional compositing techniques but this AI tool allowed me to find and add additional elements quickly and creatively.  The AI tool embedded these elements with correct lighting and perspective.  Amazing.  Swipe left to see the original image.  Cool stuff that will allow us to be even more imaginative.

Stefan (aka Mr. Hudo), talented drummer for Insomniacs, a local rock band here in Arizona.  There is no great band without a great drummer, and “Mr. Hudo” is indeed the backbone of the band. Cabbage moth, also known as the Garden White having a bit of breakfast.  The new 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO lens from OM System (formally Olympus) allows for 2x magnification out-of-the-box and up to 4x magnification when using the MC-20 teleconverter.  I’ve been impressed with the sharpness and fast auto-focus, and really enjoy the manual focus clutch for quick and precise focusing. This session was inspired by whom I refer to as “The Queen of Color,” Gilmar Smith, a talented portrait photographer in Florida who is all about, color, color, color and having fun.  This was a three speedlite setup using a white seamless paper backdrop and different colored gels on the background and fill lights. Garden White or Cabbage Moth on Blue Statice flowers at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona.  Out and about with the amazing new Macro 90mm F3.5 IS PRO lens from OM System (formally Olympus). It was late in the afternoon and the sky was very overcast, threatening to rain.  This image was captured hand-held and at ISO 10000!  Of course I used OnOne NoNoise AI 2023 to remove as much noise as possible, but the original image really wasn’t that bad. This is one of many reasons I love my OM-1 from OM System (formally Olympus) as it allows me to capture images like this full moon surrounded by an amazing cloud formation at 1/13 second hand-held!  The IBIS is amazing.  A couple of nights ago the night sky was full of these unique clouds and I spotted the full moon peaking through.  I grabbed the OM-1 with my favorite lens, the Olympus M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm f2.8 PRO, and started shooting from my backyard.  This was the result.  I applied some noise reduction using OnOne NoNoise AI 2023 and added a little vibrance in Lightroom including a slight crop.

Rufous hummingbird.  One of my favorite species here in the Southwest United States with their beautiful orange and green plumage.  These can be confused with the Allen’s Hummingbird which has much more green on the back.  Honestly, this could be an Allen’s.  It is so hard to tell especially with an immature male like this one.  Either way they are a joy to watch and photograph.

Anna’s hummingbird in flight.  Even at 1/2500 second her wings are a blur.  The yellow on the forehead and base of the beak are from pollen buildup that occurs during feeding.  These year-round visitors to the southwest are always a welcome subject to photograph.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  2022 was a satisfyingly creative year and I’m looking forward to growing as an artist, developing a wider skill set, traveling, and meeting more interesting people in 2023.  This year I switched from full-frame to micro four thirds, specifically OM System cameras and lenses (formally Olympus) and couldn’t be happier with that decision.  The OM System events, webinars, ambassadors and community are truly impressive.  KelbyOne humbled me with the 2022 Guru Award for Wildlife Photography at Photoshop World.  I consider my KelbyOne membership, Scott Kelby and the K1 staff, and participation in the KelbyOne Community to be important catalysts for my creative development. “Mr. Hudo”, drummer for local Phoenix, Arizona band Insomniacs.  Insomniacs performed live at the Yucca Tap Room in Tempe, Arizona recently.  This was my first opportunity in nearly three years to capture live music again.  My focus has been on nature and wildlife lately and not enough on places and people.  This was a good night for “people” as well as trying my OM-1 out in a low-light, indoor, live event scenario.  I started with the Olympus M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO lens but quickly discovered the Yucca was a bit “cozy” for that focal length and switched to the OM System M.Zuiko ED 12-40mm F2.8 PRO II lens to get the look I was going for.  It took a little time to retrain my brain for this type of photo situation, as I’ve been so used to photographing critters outdoors in the sunlight.  Looking forward to more of these opportunities in 2023, and would really like to try the Olympus F1.2 prime lenses next time.  LensProToGo here I come. American White Pelican coming in for a landing on a pond in Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch.  Gilbert, Arizona.  Usually we have a few of these big fellas stopping by the preserve but on this day there must have been at least three dozen across multiple ponds.  I’ve never seen so many here at one time. While shooting a couple of snowy egrets on a mild November afternoon just before sunset in Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, this one decided to fly over and start a commotion.  They can be a bit territorial from time to time and posture for position in the pond as this one is doing.  The others backed off as he put on quite the show. Black-crowned night heron in flight looking for a good perch just before sunset in Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, Gilbert, Arizona.  These birds will find a spot in the thick brush on the bank of a pond and can stay rather still for what seems like hours.  On this day in late afternoon about 30 minutes before sunset a couple of them were actually fairly active gliding from branch to branch across a pond.
